About the Founder

Nazanin is a community organizer and activist, living in Burnaby, BC. Professionally, she is trained as a clinical counsellor and holds a masters degree from Adler University. She started as a counsellor at Dragonstone Counselling in 2012 before moving to her own private practice.

Her introduction to understanding systemic causes of collective and individual oppression and struggles come from her volunteering at Salal (formerly known as WAVAW) and her union, specially the Community Social Service Workers at the CUPE 1936. Since then, she has had the privilege of learning, unlearning and growing by listening to Indigenous, Black, queer activists and later on from the Kurdish resistance movement.

Believing that systemic inequalities, such as housing unaffordability, capitalism, imperialism, unjust legal system, colonization and more were at the root causes of mental health struggles, she ran as a candidate in the 2020 provincial election with the BC Green Party.

Through her work at the Rainbow Refugee Society, Nazanin got involved in provincial and federal advocacy and inclusion for better health care for queer and trans refugees. Her professional experiences in this role as well as her own personal encounters as a racialized queer person accessing medical care inspired her to establish this clinic.

For her, Nabat Clinic represents a space where raclialized community members, specially trans, queer and gender diverse folks can expect a minimum level of respect and awareness that although they should be the norm, they are hard to come by within current health care and mental health systems.

The recent attacks on trans rights and rise of extreme infringements on human rights, within and outside of Turtle Island bring a sense of urgency for Nazanin to continue her advocacy and work.
